Today we continue our deep dive into improvisation with Part 3 of this guitar improv basics series. In today’s installment we’ll take a look at how syncopation can enhance your sound and make your solos & parts sound better and more musical.
Syncopated rhythms (emphasizing typically weak beats) add a level of surprise and excitement to any passage, and create a nice counterpoint to more standard rhythms.
In this video I demonstrate the contrast between an idea performed with a standard rhythmic feel, emphasizing the strong beats, and then performed with a syncopated feel. The goal is to show you how syncopation can change things up and add some interesting flavor to a simple idea.
I’ve also included some exercises for you to practice with to improve your skills in syncopation.
At the end we touch back on motific development with 4 short exercises that incorporate the concepts of motific development and syncopation.
