Mapping the Fretboard is one of the best ways for you to gain a better understanding of how the guitar is laid out. You can deepen your knowledge and ability to navigate the guitar by creating your own visuals, and in today’s lesson I take you into a program that I use to create diagrams and map out the neck, and show you how I think about the fretboard.
You don’t need to use software though! You can do it by hand, just like I did when I was learning guitar. I used to scratch out diagrams on notebook paper to try and master different chord or scale patterns, and there’s a lot to be learned from doing that.
If you want to go deeper and really decode the way that patterns lay out across the fretboard, creating your own “fretboard maps” is a great way to practice away from the instrument. That way you’ll have an easier time navigating the patterns when you have a guitar in your hands.
