With this video I’m beginning a series where I’m aiming to provide you with a solid foundation in what I call applied music theory, or functional music theory. Through this series we’ll be exploring the ideas and concepts that you need to know in order to have a properly functional understanding of the guitar.
I don’t see a lot of use in abstract theory concepts, and I’ve learned music theory through the way it applies to the different instruments that I play. It’s all about application!
This first video in the series looks at the intervals that we find in the major scale, specifically looking at the 7 intervals that we can find by relating each note of the scale back to the root note. If you can play a C chord and have the basic technical abilities of playing notes on the different strings, then you’ll be able to follow along.
Even if you are more advanced, my hope is that you still gain a lot through this series. There can be holes in our understanding that are holding us back from improvement, and going through important concepts from the ground up can help you identify any areas that you may be weak in.
Finding my weaknesses has always led me to the most growth! I hope that you can gain some benefit from the ideas that I am sharing, and please leave me a comment if you have a question about anything that is presented.
Also here is a link to the website for Harmonomics, the incredible ear training app that I use. Remember, you don’t have to use this particular app (even though it’s fantastic and only costs 7 bucks) but you absolutely have to spend time on ear training! Get a different app if you like, or figure out some way to do it old school. But spend time training your ears.
