One great approach to getting to know the neck better is to break patterns up into small chunks. Those chunks can be moved around to help you better utilize different areas of the guitar neck.
This video covers some exercises that can help you with an important chunk of a major scale. I got these exercises from a violin book by Henry Shradiek, and adapted them to the guitar. They are 4 simple patterns, but when practiced carefully, paying attention to accents and timing, they will help you build dexterity and finger independence.
