Chord tone soloing is one way to refer to using the notes taken from changing harmony to play more relevant and interesting sounding solos.
The basic idea is that instead of using a static scale to solo over a chord progression, you shift with the harmony. Even over a basic chord progression this will make your solo sound more interesting and sophisticated.
Over complex chord progressions that include modulation, an ability to follow the harmony with chord tones is an absolutely essential skill in order to avoid the “bad” notes.
In this video we’ll go over 4 different chord progressions, from basic to more advanced.
My hope is that this idea will get you thinking about how you can approach soloing in a new way, or if this isn’t an entirely new concept to you, hopefully it will inspire some new ideas and infuse your solos with more exciting and interesting sounds.
