This is the first lesson in a new series of condensed videos I call “shorts”. No relation to the clothing item though. In this short lesson I’ll show you a fun pentatonic lick moving chromatically through 8 different keys. This is introducing some legato & large interval practice ideas you can incorporate into your playing.
Time To Explore Shorter Form Lessons
Up to this point, I’ve been releasing mostly long form lessons. Though my audience is still small (but growing) the response has been very good.
Many people have expressed their appreciation for what I’m doing, and I love hearing from you.
Today I decided that I wanted to try a shorter form lesson, which I’ll be developing into a new series. This lesson is a lead guitar “short”. It’s a more easily digestible practice workout that will hopefully allow you to learn and benefit from it without as much toil as some of the other workouts I’ve released.
Legato & Large Interval Practice
Soloing with pentatonic scales can get stale if you aren’t reaching for new ideas. That’s why I’ve focused on two elements that can spice up your soloing; legato & large intervals.
I found that when I started getting into large intervals (to be clear, I’m talking about intervals that you can reach on a single string, such as perfect 4ths and major 3rds) it added a whole new color to my sound palette.
I fell in love with the sound of reaching perfect 4ths on a single string. It has a beautiful sparkle to it that excites me.
Legato also adds a nice soft texture to lead playing, and allows you to economize your movement in your picking hand nicely.
I hope you enjoy this lesson, and I’ll be coming out with some more “shorts” soon!
