Progressions In Position

Playing chord progressions in position is so fresh, so clean. Once you know the positions you can mix and match between them depending on how you want to sound. This lesson is going to show you a scale pattern through the most common chord progression of all time in 3 different positions.

Playing chord progressions in position: a way to minimize movement and maximize creative control

As I say in the video, this lesson gets at the heart of the concept of anchoring yourself in chord shapes. When you know and can access all the different chords in one position you have the freedom to choose whichever combination sounds best to you.

I use the idea of “progressions in position” to guide my soloing. It allows me to move seamlessly between the available positions for a specific chord.

This lesson covers only the first string set. But you can apply this concept to any of the different string sets, whether they are adjacent to each other or spread out.

When you master this idea, you’ll unlock progressions in any position. Today’s workout will get you started with the idea if it is brand new to you.
