Playing chord progressions in position is so fresh, so clean. Once you know the positions you can mix and match between them depending on how you want to sound. This lesson is going to show you a scale pattern through the most common chord progression of all time in 3 different positions.
Playing chord progressions in position: a way to minimize movement and maximize creative control
As I say in the video, this lesson gets at the heart of the concept of anchoring yourself in chord shapes. When you know and can access all the different chords in one position you have the freedom to choose whichever combination sounds best to you.
I use the idea of “progressions in position” to guide my soloing. It allows me to move seamlessly between the available positions for a specific chord.
This lesson covers only the first string set. But you can apply this concept to any of the different string sets, whether they are adjacent to each other or spread out.
When you master this idea, you’ll unlock progressions in any position. Today’s workout will get you started with the idea if it is brand new to you.
New course coming soon
My first full course is going to be coming out soon. It is called “Guitar Synergy”. It will be going into great depth on this concept, moving through each string set and will help you to master all the triad positions and chord families.
I think it could be transformational for your playing. It’s been fun and challenging to develop the course, and it has helped me improve by diving deep into the concept of these fundamental patterns.
I’m currently in production mode, and will have more information to tell about it soon.
If you are interested in hearing about when the course is released you can sign up for the email list below. Happy practicing!
Guitar Clip Of Today
Here is a link to an Alabama Shakes live performance on Saturday Night Live.
I timestamped the link to a spot where you can clearly see the lead singer/guitarist playing her major triad voicings.
She’s using a lot of the same triad shapes that I’ve introduced in this lesson. Also this song just rocks and I love their guitar parts. I think it’s worth a watch the full way through.
